The revolution as we have not seen it before, in recently discovered photographs by a Swiss and a British photojournalist

In late October and early November 1956, convoys of Western journalists arrived at the Austrian border to cross the Iron Curtain, which had just been torn down, to cover the Hungarian uprising. And so came a Swiss photojournalist, Jack Metzger, and a British colleague, Peter Isaac, who spent the next few days photographing grief, heroism, exhilaration and bravado from Győr to Budapest – and after the revolution was crushed, Hungarian refugees abroad. From a shed in Scotland and an archive in Switzerland, two exciting new series of 1956 have been presented to the wider public through Fortepan digital photo archive.

Itthon eddig ismeretlen fotók ’56-ról
A forradalom egy svájci és egy brit fotográfus nemrégiben felfedezett fényképein, ahogy még nem láthattuk

1956 október végén, november elején konvojokban érkeztek Hegyeshalomhoz a nyugati újságírók, hogy átlépjenek az éppen széthúzott vasfüggönyön, és tudósítsanak a magyar felkelésről. Így jött át egy svájci fotóriporter, Jack Metzger és egy brit kollégája, Peter Isaac is, akik a következő napokban Győrtől Budapestig fotóztak gyászt, hősiességet, mámort és vagányságot – a forradalom leverése után pedig a magyar menekülteket. Egy skóciai fészerből és egy svájci levéltárból került a Fortepanhoz két izgalmas, új képanyag 1956-ról.
